Schengen Visa from the UK (2026): Who Needs One, Documents, Fees & Appointments

You live in the UK, you have a job, a degree course or a family here, and you want a week in Paris, Rome or Barcelona. Then someone tells you your UK status does not count in Europe, and they are right. Getting a Schengen visa from the UK is a separate process with its own rules, appointments and paperwork, and people lose flight money every year because they find that out late.
This guide explains who needs a Schengen visa from the UK, what to put in your file, what it costs in pounds, and how to get an appointment when the booking portals show nothing.
- Who applies from the UK: people with a non-British, non-EU passport who live in the UK legally and whose nationality needs a visa for Schengen.
- Proof of UK status: your UKVI eVisa share code, plus your BRP card if you still have one.
- Cost: €90 for adults (about £76 to £78), €45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus a visa centre service fee.
- When to apply: up to 6 months before travel, ideally 4 to 6 weeks before you fly.
- Processing: usually 15 calendar days after your appointment, up to 45 in complex cases.
- Which country: the one where you spend the most nights.
- Short on time? GoSchengen Express Appointments can help you find earlier slots.
Who needs a Schengen visa from the UK?
Most guides skip this point: your passport decides, not your UK immigration status.
| Your passport | Visa needed for a short trip? |
|---|---|
| British | No. Up to 90 days in any 180 days |
| EU, EEA or Swiss | No |
| Visa-exempt countries (USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and others) | No, even if you live in the UK on a work or study visa |
| India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Philippines, China, South Africa, Turkey and most other nationalities | Yes |
An Indian student on a UK Student visa needs a Schengen visa. An American on a Skilled Worker visa does not. Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate, spouse and ILR status do not replace the Schengen visa, because the Schengen Area is separate territory with its own entry rules. If you hold a visa-exempt passport, do not pay for a visa you do not need. Check the EU's official visa list or ask the consulate if you are unsure.
Can you apply with an eVisa or BRP?
Yes, as long as you are legally resident in the UK on the day you apply. Physical BRP cards have largely been replaced by digital eVisas, so your proof looks different now:
- Sign in to your UKVI account and generate a share code to prove your status.
- Print your eVisa status page.
- If you still hold a BRP card, bring it as well. Some centres still ask for it.
- Your UK permission should run comfortably past your return date. Consulates prefer a clear margin, often around three months. Some accept less when the rest of the file is strong, but do not count on it.
If your status is close to expiring, sort out the extension first. A short remaining validity is one of the easiest reasons for a consulate to doubt your return to the UK.
Which country should you apply to?
Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If you split your time equally, apply to the country you enter first. For example, 5 nights in Italy, 3 in France and 2 in Spain means you apply to Italy.
The consulate compares your flights and hotels with your answer, so your itinerary has to back up the country you pick. Choosing a country because it seems easier, when your trip does not support it, is a common cause of refusal. Country guides: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Switzerland.
Schengen visa from the UK: documents checklist
Everyone needs
- Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen Area, with 2 blank pages.
- Copies of any earlier Schengen visas.
- Proof of UK residence (eVisa share code, BRP if held).
- Completed and signed application form for your destination country.
- Two recent passport photos, 35 x 45 mm, light background.
- Flight reservation and a day-by-day itinerary.
- Accommodation for the whole stay, or an invitation letter if you are staying with someone.
- Travel medical insurance valid across all Schengen countries with at least €30,000 emergency cover.
- Bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months. Consulates want regular income and believable balances, not one large deposit just before you apply.
- A short cover letter explaining the trip and your ties to the UK.
Add these for your situation
- Employed: employer letter with your role, salary and approved leave, and recent payslips.
- Student: enrolment confirmation from your university, course dates and proof your trip falls outside term time.
- Self-employed: company registration, latest tax return and business bank statements.
- Visiting family or friends: invitation letter, your host's ID or residence proof and their address details. See our family and friend visit visa page.
- Someone else is paying: sponsor's bank statements and a signed letter explaining the relationship.
- Children: birth certificate and written consent from a parent who is not travelling.
- Business trip: invitation from the host company and your employer's letter. More on the Schengen business visa.
Use refundable or changeable flight and hotel reservations while you apply, not non-refundable tickets. If you would like a second pair of eyes on the file before you submit, our Schengen visa document checking service is built for exactly that.
How much does a Schengen visa from the UK cost?
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Visa fee, age 12 and over | €90 (about £76 to £78) |
| Visa fee, children 6 to 11 | €45 |
| Children under 6 | Free |
| Visa centre service fee (VFS Global, TLScontact, BLS) | Roughly £25 to £45, depending on country and provider |
| Travel insurance | Depends on trip length and age |
| Photos | A few pounds |
The visa fee is not refunded if you are refused. Some categories, such as certain family members of EU citizens, qualify for reduced or waived fees, so check the consulate's page for your situation. Exchange rates move, so treat the pound figures as estimates.
How to apply for a Schengen visa from the UK, step by step
- Choose your destination country using the most-nights rule.
- Read that consulate's checklist. Requirements differ slightly between countries.
- Fill in the application form on the country's portal, for example France-Visas for France.
- Book your appointment with the country's visa centre.
- Attend in person to hand in documents and give fingerprints and a photo.
- Pay the visa fee and service fee on the day.
- Track your application with the reference on your receipt.
- Collect your passport and check every date on the visa straight away.
If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months, they are usually already stored, so you may not need to repeat them.
Where to apply: TLScontact, VFS Global or BLS
Most consulates in the UK do not take applications themselves. They use visa centres in cities such as London, Manchester and Edinburgh. A general guide:
- France and Germany: TLScontact
- Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands: VFS Global
- Spain: BLS International
Providers and locations can change, so confirm on the embassy's own page before booking. The centre only collects your file. The consulate makes the decision.
How to get a Schengen visa appointment in the UK faster
Slots can vanish weeks ahead, especially from spring to late summer. What helps:
- Book as soon as your itinerary is firm. You can apply up to 6 months ahead.
- Check the portal at different times of day, because cancelled slots are released at random.
- Look at other cities. Edinburgh or Manchester sometimes have space when London does not.
- Let availability guide your dates where you can.
- If you are stuck, our Express Schengen Visa Appointment Service watches for cancellations and helps you secure an earlier date.
Tell us your destination, travel dates and UK status and we will tell you what to prepare and what slots look like.

Processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days counted from your appointment, not from when you start the form. It can stretch to 30 days, and up to 45 in complicated cases. May to August is the slowest stretch.
No consulate guarantees a 48-hour decision for a standard short-stay visa, so be careful with anyone who promises one. Aim to apply at least 15 days before travel, but 4 to 6 weeks gives you a much safer buffer.
After you get the visa
- 90/180 rule: you can stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. Days in every country add together.
- Entries: a single-entry visa is used up once you leave the Schengen Area, even for a day trip to the UK or Ireland.
- Multi-entry visas: consulates often grant these to people with a clean travel history, commonly stepping up from 1 year to 2 years to 5 years.
- At the border: carry your passport, visa, insurance, accommodation proof and your UK status evidence.
Does the EU's new border system change anything?
The Entry/Exit System began rolling out in October 2025. Non-EU visitors on short stays now have fingerprints and a photo registered digitally instead of getting a passport stamp, so allow extra time at the border.
ETIAS is a separate travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers such as British passport holders. It does not replace a Schengen visa and does not apply if you need one. Its start date has been pushed back more than once, so check the official EU travel page for the latest timing.
Why Schengen visas from the UK get refused
- Flight or hotel bookings that cannot be verified.
- Bank statements that do not match your stated income or trip cost.
- Doubt that you will return to the UK, for example very little time left on your UK permission.
- Missing or inadequate travel insurance.
- An itinerary that does not match the country you applied to.
- Answers that differ between the form, cover letter and documents.
A refusal letter states the reason and the appeal deadline, which varies by country. Do not resubmit the same file. Fix the problem first. Our page on Schengen visa refusal and reapplication explains your options.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Schengen visa from the UK if I am not a British citizen?
It depends on your passport, not your UK status. If your nationality is on the EU's visa-required list, such as India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh, you need a Schengen visa even if you live in the UK legally. Holders of visa-exempt passports, such as the USA, Canada or Australia, do not.
Can I apply for a Schengen visa from the UK with an eVisa instead of a BRP?
Yes. Most people now prove UK residence with their UKVI eVisa and a share code. If you still hold a physical BRP card, bring it too, because some visa centres still ask to see it.
How much does a Schengen visa from the UK cost?
The official fee is €90 for adults and children aged 12 and over (roughly £76 to £78) and €45 for children aged 6 to 11. Children under 6 pay nothing. Visa centres such as VFS Global, TLScontact and BLS add a separate service fee, and the visa fee is not refunded if you are refused.
How long does a Schengen visa from the UK take?
Processing normally takes up to 15 calendar days from your appointment. It can take up to 30 days and, in complex cases, up to 45 days. Spring and summer are the slowest periods.
Which country should I apply to for a Schengen visa from the UK?
Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If you split your time equally between countries, apply to the country you enter first.
Can I go to Germany with a UK student visa?
No. A UK Student visa only gives you residence in the UK. If your passport needs a visa for Germany, you must get a Schengen visa before you travel.
Is a Schengen visa valid for the UK?
No. The UK is not part of the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa covers 29 European countries and cannot be used to enter England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
What should I do if my Schengen visa is refused?
Read the refusal reasons and check the appeal deadline on the letter, which differs by country. Then either appeal or correct the weak points in your file and reapply with a stronger application. More answers are on our FAQs page.
