You have leave booked, a friend in Valencia and a UK residence card in your wallet. Then you find out that your UK status carries no weight at a Spanish border. If your passport needs a visa, a trip to Spain starts with a Schengen visa application, and from the UK that application runs through BLS International, not through the Home Office and not through your airline.
Spain is one of the busiest Schengen destinations, with about 1.7 million applications in 2025 according to EU visa statistics. In the UK that demand lands on just three BLS centres, in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. That is why appointment slots are usually the first thing to go wrong, followed closely by bank statements that do not meet Spain's funds rule. This guide covers both, plus every document, fee and deadline you need.
The short version
Your passport decides whether you need a visa, not your UK immigration status. A Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate, spouse or settled status lets you live in the UK, but it does not give you any right to enter Spain.
For the full picture on other destinations and other passports, read our wider guide on how to get a Schengen visa in the UK.
The process is identical for every nationality. You apply through BLS, you give biometrics in person, and the Spanish consulate decides. What differs is how closely a file is read. Consulates look hardest at three things: whether your funds are consistent, whether you have clear ties to the UK (job, course, family, lease), and whether your UK status runs comfortably past your return date. If you are in one of these groups, build the file around those three points.
All short trips to Spain of up to 90 days fall under the short-stay Schengen visa. The category you tick depends on why you are going, and it decides which supporting papers the consulate expects.
If you are not sure which one applies, the three pages linked above lay out the differences. Moving to Spain, studying there or working there for longer than 90 days is a national visa with separate rules and is not covered here.
The Spanish consulate needs proof that you live in the UK legally and that you will come back. Because physical BRP cards have largely been replaced by digital eVisas, your proof now looks different:
If your permission is close to expiring, deal with the extension first. A short remaining validity is one of the easiest reasons for a consulate to doubt that you will return.
Take originals and one set of copies to your appointment.
A missing letter or a mismatched date is enough to slow a file down. Our Schengen visa document checking service reviews your whole file against Spain's checklist before you submit.
Spain ties its daily amount to the national minimum wage. For 2026 the figure is €122.10 per person per day, with a floor of €1,098.90 per person whatever the length of the trip (nine days' worth). These are Spain's reference amounts for entry into the country, and consulates use them as the benchmark for visa applications. The amount was updated at the start of 2026, so guides written before then show a lower number.
| Trip | Calculation | Minimum to show |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days, one adult | Floor applies | €1,098.90 |
| 14 days, one adult | 14 x €122.10 | €1,709.40 |
| 10 days, couple | 2 x 10 x €122.10 | €2,442 |
| 10 days, family of three | 3 x 10 x €122.10 | €3,663 |
Convert to pounds using the exchange rate on the day you print your statements, and keep a margin above the minimum. Always confirm the current figure on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you submit, because it is reviewed every year.

BLS International is the official visa application centre for the Spanish consulate in the UK. It collects your file and biometrics. The consulate decides. BLS does not take walk-ins, so you need a booking before you turn up.
Slots at BLS London fill first, and busy periods such as Easter and the summer holidays can leave calendars empty for weeks. A few things genuinely help:
If your trip is urgent, our fast-track Schengen visa appointment service monitors the BLS calendars and books on your behalf when a slot opens. We cannot create appointments or promise a date, and the consulate alone makes the visa decision.
| Item | Amount or timing |
|---|---|
| Visa fee, age 12 and over | €90 (about £76 to £78, paid in pounds at the rate BLS applies) |
| Visa fee, children 6 to 11 | €45 |
| Children under 6 | Free |
| BLS service charge | Added on top of the visa fee. Current amounts, including optional courier and SMS, are listed on the BLS Spain UK site. |
| Travel insurance | Depends on trip length and age, minimum €30,000 cover |
| Standard processing | Up to 15 calendar days from your appointment |
| Longer processing | Up to 30 days, and up to 45 in complex cases |
Processing is counted from your appointment, not from the day you start the form. The slowest period runs from spring to the end of summer. Do not trust anyone who promises a guaranteed decision in two days for a standard visa. The best time to apply is six to eight weeks before you leave. For Easter, July and August, start earlier.
EU visa statistics for 2025 show Spain refusing roughly 14 to 15 per cent of applications worldwide, and about one in ten for applications lodged from the UK. That is a snapshot, not a forecast for your file. Most refusals trace back to causes you can fix:
If you are refused, the notice states the reasons and the appeal deadline. Do not simply resubmit the same file. Read our guide to Schengen visa refusal and reapplication first, because the right next step depends on why the first application failed.
No Schengen country is easy by default. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or to the country you enter first if your time is split equally. Picking a country because its refusal rate looks lower, when your itinerary does not support it, is itself a reason for refusal. If Spain is your main stop, apply to Spain. If your trip is genuinely multi-country, compare our guides for France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and Greece, or browse all popular Schengen countries.
The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, with no fee under 6. The BLS service charge is added on top, plus optional extras such as courier return of your passport. Fees are non-refundable if the visa is refused.
Usually up to 15 calendar days after your BLS appointment. Busy periods or extra checks can stretch that to 30 days, and in complex cases up to 45. Book flights only once the visa is in your passport, or use a refundable fare.
There is no easy country, and you must apply to your main destination, which is the country where you spend the most nights. If your time is split equally, apply to the country you enter first. Applying elsewhere to improve your odds can lead to refusal.
Spain's 2026 benchmark is €122.10 per person per day, with a minimum of €1,098.90 per person. Proof is usually 3 months of UK bank statements, backed by payslips, savings records, or a sponsor's letter and statements.
EU figures for 2025 show roughly 14 to 15 per cent of Spanish Schengen applications refused worldwide and about one in ten for applications lodged in the UK. Most refusals come from funds, UK status or an unclear itinerary, which a complete file avoids.
Three months is the usual requirement, as long as the balance meets the benchmark and the history looks normal. Without statements you would rely on a sponsor or prepaid costs, which consulates treat with more caution. UK bank statements remain the safest proof.
The limit is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. Two stays in a year work only if the days inside every 180-day window never add up to more than 90, and your visa must allow multiple entries.
Six to eight weeks before you travel suits most people, and earlier for Easter and the summer. You can apply up to 6 months ahead and no later than 15 days before departure. Early applications make finding a BLS slot far easier.
Spain's funds benchmark rose to €122.10 a day, EES biometric checks have been fully live at the border since 10 April 2026, and UK applicants now prove their status with an eVisa share code. ETIAS has not started and does not apply to visa applicants.
Spain approves most complete applications, but it does not overlook weak funds or unclear plans. How hard a visa is depends on the strength of your file and your circumstances far more than on the country you pick.
Yes, if you live in the UK legally and your passport needs a visa. You apply through BLS Spain in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, attend in person for biometrics, and the Spanish consulate decides.
A Spain Schengen visa from the UK comes down to four things done in the right order. Confirm that your passport needs a visa. Build a file that proves your UK status and your return. Show at least €122.10 per day in clean, consistent bank statements. Then book your BLS appointment early, because the calendar is the part you cannot control.
Get those right and most of the usual refusal reasons disappear before you submit. Get any one of them wrong and you can lose weeks, and sometimes your flight money, to a delay you could have avoided.
