Spain Schengen Visa from the UK (2026): BLS Booking, Documents, Funds & Fees

You have leave booked, a friend in Valencia and a UK residence card in your wallet. Then you find out that your UK status carries no weight at a Spanish border. If your passport needs a visa, a trip to Spain starts with a Schengen visa application, and from the UK that application runs through BLS International, not through the Home Office and not through your airline.

Spain is one of the busiest Schengen destinations, with about 1.7 million applications in 2025 according to EU visa statistics. In the UK that demand lands on just three BLS centres, in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. That is why appointment slots are usually the first thing to go wrong, followed closely by bank statements that do not meet Spain's funds rule. This guide covers both, plus every document, fee and deadline you need.

The short version

  • Where you apply: BLS Spain visa centres in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, by appointment only.
  • Who applies from the UK: people who live in the UK legally and whose passport needs a visa for the Schengen Area.
  • Visa fee: €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6, plus the BLS service charge.
  • Money to show: €122.10 per person per day, with a minimum of €1,098.90 per person.
  • Insurance: at least €30,000 of medical cover valid in every Schengen country.
  • Processing: normally up to 15 calendar days after your appointment, up to 30 or 45 days in complex cases.
  • When to apply: up to 6 months before you travel and no later than 15 days before. Six to eight weeks ahead is the comfortable window.
  • Want it handled for you? See our Spain Schengen visa service for UK residents.

Who can apply for a Spain Schengen visa from the UK?

Your passport decides whether you need a visa, not your UK immigration status. A Skilled Worker, Student, Graduate, spouse or settled status lets you live in the UK, but it does not give you any right to enter Spain.

  • You need a Spain Schengen visa if your nationality is on the EU's visa-required list and you are legally resident in the UK. That covers many Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Filipino and Chinese nationals, among others.
  • You do not need a visa if you hold a British, EU, EEA or Swiss passport, or a passport from a visa-exempt country such as the USA, Canada or Australia. Do not pay for a visa you do not need. Check the EU visa list (Regulation 2018/1806) if you are unsure.
  • British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180 days without a visa. ETIAS will apply to you once it launches. It does not apply if you need a visa.

Spain visa for Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian and Bangladeshi nationals living in the UK

The process is identical for every nationality. You apply through BLS, you give biometrics in person, and the Spanish consulate decides. What differs is how closely a file is read. Consulates look hardest at three things: whether your funds are consistent, whether you have clear ties to the UK (job, course, family, lease), and whether your UK status runs comfortably past your return date. If you are in one of these groups, build the file around those three points.

Spain tourist visa, visit visa or business visa: which one?

All short trips to Spain of up to 90 days fall under the short-stay Schengen visa. The category you tick depends on why you are going, and it decides which supporting papers the consulate expects.

  • Holiday, sightseeing, events: the Schengen tourist visa. You need a day-by-day plan, accommodation and enough money for the whole stay.
  • Staying with or visiting friends or relatives (a Spain visit visa from the UK): the Schengen visitor visa. Your host provides an invitation and proof of address. Our team can help with the paperwork on both sides.
  • Meetings, fairs, conferences: the Schengen business visa, with an invitation from the Spanish company and a letter from your UK employer.

If you are not sure which one applies, the three pages linked above lay out the differences. Moving to Spain, studying there or working there for longer than 90 days is a national visa with separate rules and is not covered here.

Your UK status: eVisa, share code and BRP

The Spanish consulate needs proof that you live in the UK legally and that you will come back. Because physical BRP cards have largely been replaced by digital eVisas, your proof now looks different:

  • Sign in to your UKVI account and check that your passport details are up to date.
  • Generate a share code through GOV.UK's view and prove your immigration status service. A share code lasts 90 days, so make it close to your appointment.
  • Print the eVisa status page.
  • If you still hold a valid BRP, bring it as well.
  • BLS asks for UK permission valid for at least 90 days beyond your return from the Schengen Area. Check their current checklist the week you book, because wording can change.

If your permission is close to expiring, deal with the extension first. A short remaining validity is one of the easiest reasons for a consulate to doubt that you will return.

Spain Schengen visa requirements for 2026: documents checklist

Take originals and one set of copies to your appointment.

Everyone needs

  • Application form completed and signed, downloaded from the official BLS Spain UK website.
  • Passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen Area, with 2 blank pages. Bring old passports that contain earlier Schengen visas.
  • Photo 35 x 45 mm, recent, plain light background.
  • Proof of UK status: eVisa share code and status page, plus BRP if you hold one.
  • Travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover for emergency treatment and repatriation, valid in all Schengen countries for your full dates.
  • Flight reservation and accommodation for the whole stay, with matching dates. Use refundable or changeable bookings until you have your decision.
  • Itinerary showing where you will be each day.
  • Bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months (see the funds section below).
  • Cover letter of one page: dates, cities, who pays, and why you are returning to the UK.

Add these for your situation

  • Employed: employer letter with role, salary and approved leave, plus recent payslips.
  • Self-employed: company registration, latest tax return and business bank statements.
  • Student: enrolment letter, course dates and proof that your trip falls outside term time.
  • Visiting family or friends: invitation letter, your host's ID and residence proof, and their address in Spain.
  • Someone else is paying: sponsorship letter, the sponsor's bank statements and proof of your relationship.
  • Children: birth certificate and written consent from any parent who is not travelling.
  • Business trip: invitation from the Spanish host company and a letter from your UK employer.

A missing letter or a mismatched date is enough to slow a file down. Our Schengen visa document checking service reviews your whole file against Spain's checklist before you submit.

Proof of funds: how much money Spain wants to see

Spain ties its daily amount to the national minimum wage. For 2026 the figure is €122.10 per person per day, with a floor of €1,098.90 per person whatever the length of the trip (nine days' worth). These are Spain's reference amounts for entry into the country, and consulates use them as the benchmark for visa applications. The amount was updated at the start of 2026, so guides written before then show a lower number.

TripCalculationMinimum to show
7 days, one adultFloor applies€1,098.90
14 days, one adult14 x €122.10€1,709.40
10 days, couple2 x 10 x €122.10€2,442
10 days, family of three3 x 10 x €122.10€3,663

Convert to pounds using the exchange rate on the day you print your statements, and keep a margin above the minimum. Always confirm the current figure on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you submit, because it is reviewed every year.

How to present your bank statements

  • Three months is the usual request. Choose six if you are self-employed, paid irregularly or travelling for business.
  • Show a normal pattern: salary in, everyday spending out, balance that stays above the benchmark. Consulates read the history, not just the closing balance.
  • Avoid a large deposit just before you apply. Unexplained lump sums are among the most common reasons for refusal. If the money is genuine, for example a gift or a property sale, attach proof of where it came from.
  • Use statements that clearly show your name, account number and bank. Stamped branch statements and clearly identified online PDFs both work.
  • If someone else is paying, include their statements, a signed sponsorship letter and proof of your relationship. The paperwork has to line up.
  • No bank statements at all? A sponsor or prepaid costs can fill some of the gap, but consulates trust UK statements most. Treat that route as a last resort.

How to apply for a Spain Schengen visa through BLS, step by step

BLS International is the official visa application centre for the Spanish consulate in the UK. It collects your file and biometrics. The consulate decides. BLS does not take walk-ins, so you need a booking before you turn up.

  1. Confirm your dates and visa category. Leave a buffer for processing before you fly.
  2. Read the current checklist on the official BLS Spain UK site (uk.blsspainvisa.com). Booking directly costs you nothing beyond the BLS fees. Any agent, ourselves included, charges separately for the help they give, and you should know exactly what that covers.
  3. Complete the Spain Schengen visa application form. Make sure every detail matches your passport and documents. Differences between the form, cover letter and supporting papers cause delays.
  4. Book your UK to Spain visa appointment at the centre that covers where you live (London, Manchester or Edinburgh) and pick a slot from the live calendar.
  5. Attend in person with your file. You hand in the documents, give a photo and fingerprints, and BLS checks the file is complete. If you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, you may not need to give them again.
  6. Pay on the day: the consular visa fee and the BLS service charge. Optional extras such as courier return of your passport and SMS updates cost more. All fees are non-refundable, even if the visa is refused.
  7. Track your application. Use the tracking tool on the BLS Spain UK site with the reference on your receipt. When the consulate has decided, your passport comes back by courier or you collect it.
  8. Check every detail on the visa the moment you receive it: your name, the dates, the number of entries.

UK to Spain visa appointment: why slots disappear and what helps

Slots at BLS London fill first, and busy periods such as Easter and the summer holidays can leave calendars empty for weeks. A few things genuinely help:

  • Book the centre that covers your address. BLS assigns you to London, Manchester or Edinburgh by the county you live in, and an application from outside that area is not accepted. Check which centre is yours on the BLS site before you pick a slot.
  • Check at different times of day. Cancelled slots reappear without notice.
  • Apply early. The application window opens 6 months before travel.
  • Have your file ready before you book. That way you can take the first useful slot instead of losing it while you chase a missing letter.
  • Do not buy non-refundable tickets until the visa is in your passport.

If your trip is urgent, our fast-track Schengen visa appointment service monitors the BLS calendars and books on your behalf when a slot opens. We cannot create appointments or promise a date, and the consulate alone makes the visa decision.

Spain visa fees and processing time

ItemAmount or timing
Visa fee, age 12 and over€90 (about £76 to £78, paid in pounds at the rate BLS applies)
Visa fee, children 6 to 11€45
Children under 6Free
BLS service chargeAdded on top of the visa fee. Current amounts, including optional courier and SMS, are listed on the BLS Spain UK site.
Travel insuranceDepends on trip length and age, minimum €30,000 cover
Standard processingUp to 15 calendar days from your appointment
Longer processingUp to 30 days, and up to 45 in complex cases

Processing is counted from your appointment, not from the day you start the form. The slowest period runs from spring to the end of summer. Do not trust anyone who promises a guaranteed decision in two days for a standard visa. The best time to apply is six to eight weeks before you leave. For Easter, July and August, start earlier.

Why Spain Schengen visas are refused

EU visa statistics for 2025 show Spain refusing roughly 14 to 15 per cent of applications worldwide, and about one in ten for applications lodged from the UK. That is a snapshot, not a forecast for your file. Most refusals trace back to causes you can fix:

  • Funds that do not match the length or style of the trip, or fall below €122.10 per day.
  • Unexplained deposits, or a balance that jumps shortly before you apply.
  • A vague itinerary, or flights and hotels that do not cover the same dates.
  • UK permission that expires too soon after your return.
  • Details that conflict between the form, cover letter and documents.
  • Missing, short or incorrect travel insurance.
  • A previous overstay in the Schengen Area.

If you are refused, the notice states the reasons and the appeal deadline. Do not simply resubmit the same file. Read our guide to Schengen visa refusal and reapplication first, because the right next step depends on why the first application failed.

Is Spain the easy option, or should you apply elsewhere?

No Schengen country is easy by default. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or to the country you enter first if your time is split equally. Picking a country because its refusal rate looks lower, when your itinerary does not support it, is itself a reason for refusal. If Spain is your main stop, apply to Spain. If your trip is genuinely multi-country, compare our guides for France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands and Greece, or browse all popular Schengen countries.

After approval, and what changed for 2026

  • The 90/180 rule: you can stay up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. Days in every country count together.
  • Entries: a single-entry visa is used up once you leave the Schengen Area, even for a day trip to the UK. Multiple-entry visas are normally granted to people with a clean travel history.
  • Higher funds benchmark: Spain's daily reference amount was updated at the start of 2026 and is linked to the minimum wage.
  • Entry/Exit System (EES): fully operational at Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. Your fingerprints and a facial image are recorded on your first crossing, passport stamps are replaced by digital records, and the 90-day limit is counted automatically. Allow extra time at the border. See the official EES page.
  • ETIAS: not live yet and without a confirmed start date. It is for travellers who do not need a visa, so it does not replace a Spain Schengen visa. Check the official ETIAS page for the latest timing.
  • UK eVisas: proving your status now means a share code, not just a card.
  • At the border: carry your passport, visa, insurance, accommodation details, return ticket and UK status evidence.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Spain visa cost from the UK?

The Schengen visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6 to 11, with no fee under 6. The BLS service charge is added on top, plus optional extras such as courier return of your passport. Fees are non-refundable if the visa is refused.

How long does a Spain Schengen visa take from the UK?

Usually up to 15 calendar days after your BLS appointment. Busy periods or extra checks can stretch that to 30 days, and in complex cases up to 45. Book flights only once the visa is in your passport, or use a refundable fare.

Which country is easy to apply for a Schengen visa from the UK?

There is no easy country, and you must apply to your main destination, which is the country where you spend the most nights. If your time is split equally, apply to the country you enter first. Applying elsewhere to improve your odds can lead to refusal.

How much bank balance is required for a Spain tourist visa, and what counts as proof of sufficient funds?

Spain's 2026 benchmark is €122.10 per person per day, with a minimum of €1,098.90 per person. Proof is usually 3 months of UK bank statements, backed by payslips, savings records, or a sponsor's letter and statements.

What is the visa rejection rate for Spain, and what is the success rate in 2026?

EU figures for 2025 show roughly 14 to 15 per cent of Spanish Schengen applications refused worldwide and about one in ten for applications lodged in the UK. Most refusals come from funds, UK status or an unclear itinerary, which a complete file avoids.

Is a 3-month bank statement enough for a Schengen visa, and can I get one without a bank statement?

Three months is the usual requirement, as long as the balance meets the benchmark and the history looks normal. Without statements you would rely on a sponsor or prepaid costs, which consulates treat with more caution. UK bank statements remain the safest proof.

Can I stay in Spain for 90 days twice a year?

The limit is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area. Two stays in a year work only if the days inside every 180-day window never add up to more than 90, and your visa must allow multiple entries.

What is the best time to apply for a Schengen visa?

Six to eight weeks before you travel suits most people, and earlier for Easter and the summer. You can apply up to 6 months ahead and no later than 15 days before departure. Early applications make finding a BLS slot far easier.

What are the changes to the Schengen visa requirements in 2026?

Spain's funds benchmark rose to €122.10 a day, EES biometric checks have been fully live at the border since 10 April 2026, and UK applicants now prove their status with an eVisa share code. ETIAS has not started and does not apply to visa applicants.

Does Spain give visas easily, and which Schengen visa is hardest to get?

Spain approves most complete applications, but it does not overlook weak funds or unclear plans. How hard a visa is depends on the strength of your file and your circumstances far more than on the country you pick.

Can I get a Schengen visa for Spain from the UK?

Yes, if you live in the UK legally and your passport needs a visa. You apply through BLS Spain in London, Manchester or Edinburgh, attend in person for biometrics, and the Spanish consulate decides.

Conclusion: get your Spain Schengen visa file right the first time

A Spain Schengen visa from the UK comes down to four things done in the right order. Confirm that your passport needs a visa. Build a file that proves your UK status and your return. Show at least €122.10 per day in clean, consistent bank statements. Then book your BLS appointment early, because the calendar is the part you cannot control.

Get those right and most of the usual refusal reasons disappear before you submit. Get any one of them wrong and you can lose weeks, and sometimes your flight money, to a delay you could have avoided.
